They have clearly put some love into this book. First of all it is very large and has A LOT of stuff in it. The book itself is an art piece, there's this shiny metal ink used in almost every page that I have never seen in any book before. The images are large, sharp and clear, the book opens wide and the content varies from simple sketches to storyboards to computer generated 3D images. They also have a lot of text that is all very well written. They have also included the full back story "LEGENDS", also found in the game. The art style is very distinctive. The layouts in this book are THE BEST I'VE EVER SEEN IN ANY ART BOOK EVER. There are stylish blood splatters around the pages, the previously mentioned "metal ink" patterns and drawings... even the pages are numbered like this: 00:1, 00:2, 00:3! I'm not a metal fan and I think the game had it's problems but this book is one the best art books there is. They have clearly paid attention to everything and this book deserves all the praise it gets. If only all other art books were like this. (I own a first printing)

(More pictures on my blog)Brutal Legend is what happens when you mix rock, art and game together. The story is about the world's greatest roaddie Eddie Riggs being thrown back in time to the ancient age of rock. He mas master the power of rock to stop evil. What a riot. Reminds me of a certain other Hollywood film. The Art of Brutal Legend is probably the largest art book printed by Udon so far. It's a huge hardcover measuring about 12 by 12 inches. There are 252 pages. I like that the page numbers are marked out like the time you see on music players. Nice touch.I remember the book was scheduled for release a few years ago, but it never came out until recently after Udon published it. The Brutal Legend game came out in 2009.The book features concept art for the weird, interesting characters and macabre landscapes. The art style looks like they are drawn by a rock-dreaming teenager who's about to get detention for the drawings, or a rocker who knows how to draw. The enemies look pretty cool. You've the cliche dudes with studded leather jackets, tattoo brutes, then you have flying microphones, rockers who smoke through exhaust pipes, organ pipe car and other interesting combinations of concepts. The text covers the character profiles, design ideas and background to creating the game. You can read all about the different legends and mythologies created for the game. This is a fine video game companion art book. By the way, the game's created by Double Fine Productions.Recommended to fans of the game.

The reason I am giving this a three star rating instead of one that is higher is because while I really did appreciate the art and conceptual pieces in this book, it seemed like a bunch of fluff compared to what I was hoping for.I was really hoping for some more in-depth drawings of the characters and the creatures of the world of Brutal Legend. What I got was a short blurb about each character and maybe two drawings or pieces devoted to each.. as for the creatures, they got one page of just random concepts (not even the actual characters they used in game, but random creatures they generated for potential use). I honestly would have liked some better images of the creatures.Still, it was really interesting finally getting to read all the influences they pulled for this game and their amusing stories about how they came up with certain concepts.Just overall, it seemed a little flat as an art book devoted to the game.

One of the main reasons I love the game so much is for its visual design and reverence of all things metal, so the art book was always going to be a must buy. It doesn't disappoint either, there's plenty of insight into the creative process from the artists involved and it's interesting to see the evolution of characters and environments and the direct sources certain elements were taken from. There's plenty of information to supplement the art without ever taking over, and the presentation itself is great with good quality paper and a density to make it feel like as much love went into the book as the game. I shelled out some extra money for the signed, shiny slipcase edition and have no regrets. Highly recommended.

Offers a lot of information about the development of the art style in the game, and a ton of early concepts. I loved Brutal Legend's world, and this offers a lot of insight to how they envisioned everything, added with lore and history of the world before the game even begins. If you loved Brutal Legend, I would highly recommend this book.

Oh man. This book is epic. The art style is... Well, let's just say my only regret is I wasn't able to be a part of the team when making the game. It would have been the Most. Fun. Ever. Absolutely gorgeous.
