Food Wars!, Vol. 3 Reviews

Soma and his classmates go to a cooking camp for a series of culinary challenges - fail one and you’re expelled from the exclusive Totsuki Institute! Soma and Megumi are teamed up again, this time to use the natural surroundings of the camp to create a traditional Japanese dish, and Soma meets a pair of new adversaries: the Aldini Brothers. Eh… I think I’m about done with Food Wars. Creators Yuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki have basically levelled out on what they can do in this series and are now repeating themselves. Soma and Megumi have to make a dish against the odds - done it before. Erina makes angry noises at Soma - done it before. Dull and arbitrary nemeses - done it before. Another shokugeki (food duel) is announced - done it before. So these guys are basically out of ideas and it’s only the third volume! There are just a couple of dishes to drool over and they weren’t that inspired compared to previous meals. That’s a minor complaint but it’s indicative of the staleness of the series. As if to add insult to injury, the book is only about 75% Food Wars as the last quarter is filled up with artist Shun Saeki’s dreary debut manga for Shonen Jump: Your and My Romance Counselling. It’s about a shy boy who declares his love to the wrong girl and all manner of “charming” misunderstandings follow. Saeki classes it up with several panels of underage girls in bikinis and upskirt shots. Garbage. The first volume of Food Wars is a fun read but I’d leave it at that - this isn’t a series that has the chops to go the distance. Food Wars Volume 3 is boring with little to offer - the quirkiness and originality is gone and what’s left isn’t worth bothering with.

We've now moved on to the unavoidable "school trip" that all manga set in learning establishments has to take, pretty early in the series too which surprised me. I think what I like most about this series is how it makes fun of shounen tropes. Pretty hilarious when one of the characters that's fighting with Souma says something like "until we meet again!" then you turn the page and they're sitting next to each other on the bus and Souma is like, "hey ... we meet again ..." 😆I like this series; it's not super over-the-top but it's not boring either.

4.25 out of 5 stars. ❝A devil's den where the talented meet and devour each other—that is Totsuki!❞ The more volumes of Food Wars! I read, the more I grow to love it! The characters are so likeable and entertaining. What a great manga! ❝Let us meet again, Yukihira Souma!❞ ____________________Food Wars! Volume 2★★★★✩Food Wars! Volume 4★★★✩✩

This was an enjoyable volume that ended on a high peak, leaving one wanting to read the next volume soon. I would immediately do so, if I weren't also reading the Miracle Girls series right now. I would love to catch up onFood Wars ~ Shokugeki no Souma soon, and watch the anime as well. In the first part, Soma and Tadokoro pair up. We all know that Megumi is a weak cook on her own. Luckily, she works well as part of a pair. Her and Soma easily win the Nature Challenge. But, the second challenge finds them working separately, and Tadokoro gets expelled for slightly changing a recipe to better it. This upsets Soma, and he issues the head chef of that challenge a "shougeki" notice meaning that he wants to battle him one-on-one. If Soma wins, he demands that Megumi not be expelled from camp/school. This ends the main story of this volume. There is also an enjoyable short story about 2 friends that refuse to admit how they feel about one another. They end up telling one another they'll give each other romance advice. He pretends he wants to confess to another girl, but he cannot do it. She overhears him saying this to the other girl, and then, tells him she has a crush in someone. We know it's him, but he doesn't. She doesn't straight-out tell him, but her actions speak well.

I really loved this volume which was the beginning of my two favorite arcs in the anime (adapted from this manga). The heart-warming nature, plus character development, of these two arcs are great stuff. Looking forward to them in the next volume or two.Closing out the volume were two short stories. One a funny scene that the anime briefly showed, and the other a completely unrelated short story. Unfortunately the short story had no ending. *Grumblegrumble* I hope the ending is in future volumes.Good stuff.

another 4.5 stars for this one.. I'm really enjoying this Manga series!!! This time we take it up a notch and see the chef students sent to boot camp.. they are assigned almost impossible tasks to test their talents and endurance.. a little different from the first 2 as there's finally an element of romance in this one.. fun read, looking forward to the next instalment now..

Actually preferred this third volume to its predecessor, perhaps because the focus is moving more onto the food testing (gathering ingredients in a difficult situation and making a dish - HxH anyone?) and less on gratuitous shots of the female characters. I still don't really care for or have that good a grasp of the characters, but this volume got my attention once more on this series.

I enjoy this series way too much. It is pure silliness, but I get sucked in every time by the likability of the characters and the over-the-top dramatics. This volume has an excellent back-up story to boot.

Update: Full Review http://bookishrealmreviews.blogspot.c...Finished this so quickly I mean probably in like an hour. It chronicles the journey that Soma and the rest of his classmates must take when they are invited to a "friendship" cooking camp. As always there a challenges twists and turns. I'm loving this series and the anime. Once I read the 4th volume I will be doing a full review.

Per altre mie considerazioni su questa serie, rimando alle righe scritte per il Volume 1.Mi limiterò ad aggiungere che da allora ho deciso di acquistare e leggere questa serie nonostante io la stia già seguendo nella sua versione animata.

MmmmMmmmHow can a story about a culinary school be this exciting? I mean, I like fried fish as much as anyone, but I never thought a decision to use crackers for breading would be so rousing.

If you haven't figured it out yet, Isshiki-sempai is ~fabulous~! Now our first year students are put to their first brutal test...The Training Camp from Hell! If you think this is your typical school trip with happy-go-lucky fun, you're sadly mistaken. Somebody might die on this trip...or worse! be expelled! You can be expelled for any reason and it's the alumni who are judging you...harshly.You grow to love the characters and the story keeps adding more characters to get attached to...like the little Italian baby~

Still enjoying this series and the background stories of the new characters introduced. I also thought the bonus unrelated story (high school student who botches a confession to his big crush) at the end felt fresh and emotionally evocative, despite the fact that this plotline is hardly original.

2.5 stars I finished off the last quarter of this volume after almost a year. It’s all content I mostly enjoyed in the anime, but because I really only have a fresh memory of a little more than a chapter, volume three was just decent. An one shot written by the artist is included, taking up a portion of the pages in the end.

Although I like the whole thing, I find it somehow irritating how the protagonist is not really adding anything to his information base or his experiences. Just came to the school to beat them all with his little knowledge! makes you wonder what good get him with this school. If no one beat him soon I guess the manga will lose its popularity.

Read 2/1/185 StarsThis series is just too good! The characters are developing and are becoming more confident. I love Soma as a protagonist. He’s such a funny, confident guy and he stands up for what he believes in. He’s a great leader and very loyal friend, which shows at the very end of this volume. I can’t wait to continue this series.

I binge watched all three season of the anime on hulu and can't wait for the fourth season to premier in April! ... which is why I read all 251 chapters of the manga they have published so far to catch up. Such a fun manga! Will continue to read this year week by week.

Another great Food Wars! Some of the head chefs in this one were annoying characters, but the competition between the cooks gets more exciting and I really love all the members of Polaris. And more great recipes!

If I was a "food person" I might enjoy this series more. As it is, the endless descriptions of food, flavors, etc. just gets in the way of the story for me.

More of the same fun from the first two books (with a bit less weirdness, actually), and the side stories are fun too.
