On a Pirate Ship Reviews
Pretty good pirate book for young children since it has relatively few words per page and offers good vocabulary. It is one of the few books that actually goes into what pirates actually do, which is attack other ships, fight their crew, take their stuff, and leave them marooned or force them to join the crew. It's all done very light but it does put a new light on the romance of pirating, doesn't it?
For little ones who aren't certain what it means to be a pirate, this is a great G-rated story to introduce them to what happens during pirates day. It does have a battle, but it is one page long and not graphic at all and when the pirates celebrate their victory they "drink hot spicy drinks and sing and dance till dawn." There is lots of room for interaction - the kids can mimic steering the ship, pulling in the sails, swordplay at sea and the BOOM! of a cannon!
I think little boys would love this book!! It's full of adventure and excitement. It's perfect for any classroom. Beginners may need a little bit of help, but intermediate and advanced elementary students will do great with this. I thought it was a really cute book.
This book is great for kindergarten age students. There is really great vocabulary in here as well as wonderful illustrations. Also, the way the words are written on the page is very visual and great for kids.
3* art1* storySorry, just a little too glossy on what pirates actually do. Search for treasure? Um, it's not that I want blood and gore - just, don't go there if you're not going to tell the truth. Spicy drinks = rum? Not for me.
Meh - 2*I didn't really enjoy it. The children weren't fully engaged in the story. There was no plot to the story....
This story is about using your imagination to be a pirate, probably not the best option for a bed time story.
